The Same Question All The Time
"Wow, living together is like being at Disneyland...all the time!"
Well, actually that probably wouldn't be a good analogy. Sure at Disneyland the rides are fun, but there are also long lines, screaming kids and bad food. And here so far...well, the rides have been great, there is never a line (we have two bathrooms), we only have to deal with screaming kids at 2 AM when the drunks are coming off the metro and the food, well the food has been fantastic (I have always loved Italian). So I guess basically, living together has been better than being at Disneyland.
Does that answer the question?

Moved Again
We have been living together full time for a few weeks now. I don’t care how long you date someone or how many days a week you spend together, living together is a whole new animal. So far things have gone well, but I am sure that I am not the only one having to adjust to this new living arrangement.
The short term plan is to rent my place -- furnished. We have had it up for rent for a few weeks but have only had a few calls. It is a bad time to try to rent a place, but hopefully we will find someone soon. I put up a web site about my place in case you know someone who might be interested.
Long term, who knows what we will do, but for right now life is good. So if you are looking for me, you can find me in North Bethesda.
Have a great holiday weekend.

Just Catching Up
Overall life has been good – although my brother called me to let me know that my mom thought I sounded depressed on the phone the other day. Depressed? Moi? I am not sure I have ever truly been depressed, but I certainly have not been “blupressed” for a while. Don’t worry mom, my life is peachy. Most of the time I would say it has never been better. And my only real complaints are about work and the economy – like most people today.
Anyway, here are a few of my latest happenings and some thoughts of mine.
The Rose bought a newly used car. I like the new car, mainly because it is a convertible and I miss mine terribly. Unfortunately, we really won’t be able to enjoy the wind in our hair until spring. And yes I have hair, it is just really short. Speaking of her new car…
The Rose and I drove to Poughkeepsie last weekend for a wedding in her new ride. K’s brother got married and as I am an adopted part of their family, I scored an invitation. I would suggest that everyone who has Poughkeepsie on their list of places to see before they die, should really remove it. I think The Rose hit it on the head when she said that the town peaked in the 70’s. And although I applaud their recent efforts to bring it back, it really isn’t worth the trip. The drive up was very nice though as it is fall on the east coast and as a west coaster, I did not grow up with fall. On the west coast we tend to go straight from summer to why won’t is stop raining. It was nice to drive up through the mountains with all the fall colors. Oh, and the wedding was nice.
I also went north earlier this month for Sam’s first birthday. She is already getting big and the party was, well overdone, as I guess they should be. I am always amazed at the effort that parents put into the first birthday party since it is the one birthday the child is sure to never remember. Sam did seem to enjoy eating her birthday cake. Pictured below.
I am also looking forward to voting next week for a few reasons. First this is the first time I have lived in a state where my vote might actually mean something. I have always lived in a state where the winner was predetermined before the voting started. That always made presidential elections a little less exciting for me. I mean I lived in Texas when Bush was elected the first time. He was the Governor and although I knew he was an idiot, it wasn’t like he wasn’t going to carry Texas, so why vote? Now I live in one of the swing states and believe me, I long for the days of living with the predetermined. You have no idea how many ads and radio spots we have to endure in the swing states. It isn’t every day or every hour, it is every minute here. I am so over it. I mean really, are there people out there that are still undecided? What the hell are they waiting for? So the second reason I am happy to be voting next week, is that it will all be over.
I am also excited for my sister as she is starting a new business in January. This has been a long time coming and I truly hope that this works out for her.
There is also some exciting news about The Rose and me, but I will save that for my next post.

My Weekend So Far
1. The flight was oversold by 31 passengers. That's right - 31. How do you do that? Don't get me started on the need for a national airline.
2. Lunch at the grandparents was great as always. Needless to say, plenty of food.
3. Big dinner with the family including lobster and steamers from up north. Oh did I forget the chicken, ribs, shrimp with dinner as well. You will never go hungry in Norwood.
4. Now we are visiting the home of the Gorton's Fisherman. Mom would be proud as there is a large Portuguese community here.
More to come if I don't get her shorts wet again.
Update on the weekend:
5. The Rose's aunt has a great house right on the beach. I enjoyed staying there and the beach is fantastic. The weather could have been better, but Sunday was beautiful.
6. The golf course in Gloucester was very nice. A little short for me, but I enjoyed playing. The drinks at the 19th hole were very strong - always a sign of a great country club. Thanks to her uncle for the invite.
7. I might have made my best golf swing of the season on the 14th hole. I was making this swing about 30% of the time last year, but throughout this season it seemed to have vanished. Who knows, maybe it is back.
8. It was fun running around Rockport on Sunday in the rain. But I still don't understand why a lobster sandwich costs $22.00. I guess I should be thankful, it was $29.00 in Nantucket.
9. Of course it wouldn't be a trip without some airline issues. We sat on the plane for 2 hours waiting to take off. Some sort of broken part issue. So we got home very late instead of in time for a good night's sleep.
Overall it was a great trip. I enjoy traveling with The Rose. She has a great family, so it is easy to visit them. Next trip will be Key West in a few weeks.

Island Life
I am good for about two hours on the beach and then I am ready to go. I would be useless in a labyrinth. I won’t be going on a boat anytime soon. I am a good moped rider. I am willing to try any vodka – even habanera. I like ice cream. I am pretty good with an outdoor grill. There are limits to what I am willing to spend for things - $330.00 for sunglasses, get real! I have good friends and a very happy goddaughter. And the one thing I really hoped she learned this week is that I really care for her.
As for what I learned about her, well, she is a good fisherman. She would be very useful in a labyrinth. She also likes ice cream. She can cook anything and make it taste good. She is a trooper and will try to stick it out even if she should just say let’s go home. She can spend hours on the beach at a time. She is a good moped passenger. She thinks the Atlantic Ocean is cold. Believe me, these are all good things to know, since we have two more beach trips this summer planned.
As for Nantucket, I think we both agree that it was a good trip, but we would probably not choose to go back. Not that I have a problem with small, confining, overpriced islands filled with the over privileged. But I think you can have just as much fun getting a house at the beach on the cape itself. This would open up many day trip or excursion opportunities you can not get on the island.
Overall the vacation was great. There were a few bumps in the week, but I think we weathered them pretty well. Special thanks to T&K for being very good vacation buddies. It was also good to spend time with Baby Sam as she is really starting to grow and develop her personality. She couldn’t have been a better baby all week.
Oh and happy birthday to my mom. I hope you had a great day.

I am saving room for dinner…
You have to understand that I lost all of my grandparents when I was still a child. I believe the last of them died when I was around 14 years old. Now that I am old enough to technically be a grandparent – don’t get any ideas Nick – my parents are the oldest people I know and they are in their early sixties. The Rose’s grandparents are in their mid eighties. They have been married since they were in their early twenties…yeah, they will be married sixty-six years in August. Imagine that sometime.
Her grandparents are great. Her Nunna is constantly cooking and thus tried to feed me all weekend. There is always room for a little more macaroni. She is the type of grandmother that makes something special for you because you like it. Her brother made a random comment, around the time the second or third course came up from the basement, about not having fried meatballs and low and behold, ten minutes later – fried meatballs. Oh and delicious fried meatballs. I mentioned to her that I like the bragiole she cooked Friday night and so she made it for me again on Sunday. Again delicious.
There was so much food and it just kept coming up from the basement – where her SECOND kitchen is. I got to the point that, if asked if I needed more food, I would always respond, "no thanks I am saving room for dinner," even after dinner was served. We had home made pasta with “sauce” – you Italians will know what that means – and bragiole, sausage, meatballs, pork and lamb for dinner. Oh and lest I forget the chicken cutlets. This was after having soppressata and cheese as well as meatballs and fried meatballs for a snack. AND THIS WAS JUST FRIDAY NIGHT! We had a BBQ on Saturday – for the cousin who graduate high school – and another big dinner on Sunday. I have never eaten so much food in three days.
After dinner Friday night, Nunna said she had thought of making rice pudding but hadn’t gotten to it, so The Rose and she made it together, just in case we had saved room for dessert. What room? Her brother could barely move while sitting in a chair after dinner.
We spent a lot of time this weekend just talking to them and I found their lives to be fascinating. They are funny and insightful. Her grandfather told us stories of delivering mail before there were zip codes. He is a retired postal worker. Nunna spent her youth sewing in a sweat shop in Boston.
We discussed what it was like to raise a family in the old days. How they didn’t have heat growing up so in the winter time they would sleep with a hot brick in their bed. Or how it was so cold they would close off the front room of their apartment because, according to her uncle, ”it would snow in there.” How they used to use every ounce of food they could get and how meat was a luxury. How they used to “fight over the last piece of fried blood for breakfast,” according to her dad. The conversations were great and I don’t think I have laughed that hard in a long time.
And Nunna, don’t worry I will still talk to you even if you vote republican this year.
They made me feel like a part of the family and I am really glad I got to meet them. It makes me wish that my grandparents had lived long enough for me to become an adult and truly appreciate their experiences and their lives. If you are lucky enough to have some old timers still around in your family, take the time to learn about their lives. It is truly amazing how different our lives are today from theirs. I really don’t know how they made it.
I met most of the Rose’s family this weekend and I am amazed at how close they all are. I am lucky that over the last decade I have gotten close with my immediate family – my siblings and parents. But it is different for The Rose. Her entire family is very close. Aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews are all part of one big family unit. They celebrate and commiserate together. And although I may think it a little strange to travel to Boston just to see a cousin graduate from high school, I think it must be incredible to have a family that would.

The Rose
I promised an update on The Rose and I always keep my promises. It has been almost five months since we first met, so I think we have gotten know each other pretty well. Here are some random thoughts about her and many of the things I find so irresistible:
- For the most part, she tells you exactly what is on her mind. This is refreshing as I don’t have to spend all my time trying to figure out what it is that we are REALLY talking about.
- She is very self aware and, as someone who thinks of himself as being self aware, I really appreciate the fact that she knows her own tendencies.
- She doesn’t like any science fiction shows or movies – I mean she has never even seen “The Matrix” – but she never misses American Idol – amazing!
- She is always the first to realize that she has overreacted to something and is the first to apologize for it. This usually doesn’t take days, but rather minutes.
- She always puts the TP roll on upside down. Don’t laugh, there is an upside down.
- She is very smart and in tune with the things that are happening in the world, much more than I am.
- She is fussy and likes things done her way – like all women I have ever known.
- She is unbelievably sweet and kind to people even when she doesn’t have to be.
- She is very sassy and never misses a chance to pick on me. And she certainly doesn't let me get away with anything.
- She will not admit that she has ever been wrong about anything we have discussed in the last five months. This is actually pretty cute.
- She is a horrible typist and I need my secret decoder ring to carry on an IM conversation with her.
- She enjoys good food and good wine and is a very good cook.
- She is a Virgo, but with a Sagittarian moon so, despite conventional wisdom that we wouldn't get along, we share some important traits.
- Oh, and of course, she is beautiful. I truly enjoy the "What is she doing with him?" looks I get when we are together.
As far as an update on us, well things are good. Our schedules don’t always allow us to see each other much during the week, but we spend a lot of time together on the weekends. My friends told me a few months ago that they have not seen me this happy in a long time and I can assure that The Rose is the reason why.

Someone Pass Me the Pepto
It has been a long weekend of golf, drinking and eating way to much chicken. These guys really like wings - we ate at Hooters, Buffalo Hot Wings and too much KFC. I could use a good fish dinner.
The golf trip was great. Twenty guys competing on the course and boozing it up at night. I played too many rounds - six total in four days. I am exhausted and really tired of being in the car. I am writing this to pass the time as we are about four hours into a seven hour drive home. Brutal.
I like most of the guys on the trip. I did seem to have a golf course personality clash with one of them, but that is likely to happen with so many guys.
It was also tough being the only low handicap golfer in the group. With a low handicap comes a lot of expectations. As I told The Rose, I think I lived up to the hype. The golf definitely got worse as the weekend progressed, but not just for me, everyone seemed to play a little worse each day.
It really has been a long couple of weeks. Vegas last week and Myrtle Beach this week. The nice thing is I won money on both trips. Of course I spent it all, but that's what these trips are for.
Next for me will be a trip to Atlantic City next month. It will be a short trip - one night. The Rose and I will meet K&T for some light gambling and a good dinner. We are also talking about renting a beach house on Nantucket in July. My first time in Nantucket.
Next week I will be back in the gym as all the good work I have done over the last few months was undone in the last two weeks. I need some ruffage and a good workout.

All Hail The Chair
The condo board formed four committees - social, communications, facilities and budget. Guess which one I joined. No not the social committee, I don’t like people that much. I joined the communications committee. We are chartered with setting up a newsletter, web site and generally communications process for the building. We had our first meeting last night and although there is a lot of work involved, the group seems very sharp and we should have some fun. Oh, and they elected me as the Chair of the Communications committee.
The Rose and I are going to a vodka and caviar tasting tonight at Morton’s Steakhouse. Morton’s is having these tastings across the country in the month of March. I am not really sure what to expect, but since The Rose likes caviar and I like vodka, it seems like a good fit.
Speaking of The Rose, here is a photo of us in Myrtle a few weeks ago. I love it when the beach is deserted. No crowds, just the two of us, a few surfers and some birds…what could be better.
The picture used in this post was not doctored or altered in any way. She is that beautiful and I look that bad. What can I say, the generosity of some women never ceases to amaze me.

A Rose By Any Other Name
Last night The Rose got to see Tequila Drunk Blue for the first time. TDB is a relatively rare site, usually only allowed out in New Jersey. She has been very nice to me this morning. She even went out and got me donut holes and coke, not that kind of coke, the kind that rots your teeth.
We are going to the beach today while the weather is good. Maybe some shopping later. No tequila in my immediate future.

No, No Girls, I Am Taken
So last night for Valentine's Day, I had The Rose over for, wait for it, left over pizza and chili. You all wish you were dating me right now, don't you?
We are actually walking out the door as we are heading to Myrtle Beach. We rented a condo for the weekend. My first time down there. Should be fun.

How Many Can You Find?
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I sort of preferred it when the people from Boston spent them time wallowing in self pity and talking about curses. Don’t get me wrong, I was very tired of them playing the Glum character in Gulliver’s Travels, but I have come to realize that they are much more tolerable as the loveable losers than they are gracious as the winners. I can’t imagine how bad it will be if the Celtics with the NBA tile this year. How will we live with them then?
So it will be me and a bunch of Patriot fans for the Super Bowl. I am about to find out how K felt back in 1990 when we watched the NFC Championship game between the NY Giants and the San Francisco 49ers at my parent’s house, with many 49er fans and absolutely no Giants fans.
You might remember the game as it is maybe the best NFC Championship game in history. The Giants won 15-13, mainly due to a Roger Craig fumble late in the fourth quarter. Craig was one of the greatest backs in 49er history, but unfortunately he is mainly known for this fumble.
Now K is a lifetime Giants fan and to his credit he was very quiet and polite the entire game. And it wasn’t until after the Giants won and as my mom was walking around the house ranting - “WE WILL NOT BE WATCHING THE SUPER BOWL IN THIS HOUSE!” - that K finally got up from his chair, while no one but me could see, and did his quiet victory dance. It was quite funny. I don’t think the Giants will be pulling off the miracle upset next weekend, but if they do, I will save my victory dance until after we leave.

Blue = Nice
The Rose: I haven’t really dated anyone like you before.OK, I will wait for those of you that know me to get up off the floor and stop laughing. I don’t think anyone has ever accused me of being too nice. No one has ever even accused me of being nice. Especially not the nephew that refers to me as Mean Uncle Bill or the Seabee who threatened to kick my ass if he ever saw me again. How about the guy at the Christmas party this year who took offense to the way I was playing pool. The Christmas season seems to affect us all differently.
Blue944: Like me?
Blue944: you mean human?
Blue944: good looking?
Blue944: funny?
The Rose: I feel like I have more of an edge than you do
The Rose: Like you may be too nice for me....
I guess if you polled all of my friends, most of them would say that I was a nice guy, that you can count on me to be there to help, but that I can pick on someone incessantly. Maybe I just haven’t picked on The Rose enough for her to see my not so nice side. I guess we aren’t in that place as described by Becky about her relationship.
“One thing I really like about our status is that we're over that initial dating hump in terms of figuring out what you like/don't like, being on your somewhat best behavior (like trying to not burp), having friends that don't quite realize that you're a real couple to think about inviting you both out. Now, I feel like we're truly ourselves, for the good and the bad, and it's quite...comfortable (in a good way).”I don’t necessarily feel as though I have been on my best behavior, but maybe…I will say that I definitely don’t think that we are “truly ourselves” as Becky put it. But then again Becky just passed the one year dating mark and we are on about the sixth week. I am sure that our comfort level will increase as we spend more time together.
At the end of the day, I am not sure that successful relationships come down to being nice or not. All of us are nice and all of us have the capacity to be mean or even mean spirited. I think relationships are still about accepting people for who they are, enjoying the positive attributes and handling their negative ones.
Come to think of it, maybe she has just never dated someone who is so deep, thoughtful, introspective, and you know, humble.

Solving Big Problems
I am in day three of the semi-annual detox program. For those of you new to this it basically means I do not have sugar, caffeine or alcohol for two weeks. I basically live on some supplements, designed to clean out your body, and a rather slim amount of food. Well, that is not true, there is plenty to eat, but the selection is very limited. I only eat fresh vegetables, brown rice and fish. I also have a protein shake made from berries in the mornings. I find the whole thing very cleansing. On top of all that, I generally find it easier to exercise during this two weeks for some reason. Exercising is going to become a big part of Blue’s 2008.
I have also finally solved the big issue of where to put my wine in the new condo. I realize it is not a world peace or new president size issue, but it was a big issue for me. I have been storing it in my bedroom closet. But I went out and bought some new wine racks and mounted them on the wall. The picture is below. Let me know what you think.
You can see more of my condo in the new photos on the right. I have to go, things to do and then meeting The Rose for a movie. Have a great week.

Quick Notes...
From my ski trip this weekend.
- I am SO over my twenties. I spent the weekend in a four bedroom condo with some twenty-somethings and I can tell you that I am so past all the issues that twenty-somethings have. I must admit that these were very put together and successful twenty-somethings and I was still blown away by the issues they think they have.
- I am very hopeful for the future as we had two 18 year old boys with us for the weekend and not once did they try to drink any alcohol. If this is typical behavior for kids today, then we might be better off in the future. I am convinced that the people running the world today were more like me in high school and killed too many brain cells to make proper decisions. Maybe the future is not as bleak as it seems.
- As someone who has been through both, I would like to give this little pearl of wisdom. The dating pool may be deeper in your twenties, but I guarantee the water is much nicer in your thirties. Hang in there, life is long.
- The Rose is very easy to travel with. She packs fewer clothes than I do and is pretty low maintenance on trips. She has taken to calling me Metro and those of you that know me would agree with her. I had a great time this weekend and most of that had to do with her. Some of it had to do with all the wine we drank.
- Speaking of wine, I have a new rule. If your tasting menu has more wines on it made from miscellaneous fruit than it does wines made from grapes, then you don’t get to call yourself a winery. Anything made purely from raspberries, blackberries and blueberries is not a wine, it is spiked syrup.
- We also need to redefine when you are allowed to call yourself a ski resort. I would think that a “mountain” would be required in order for you to call yourself a ski resort. This was not a mountain. This was barely a hill. And although I will admit that the weather last week did not help, they did not have any snow either. Snow is sort of a loose term…I meant ice and little white pellets that look similar to snow. There was so little snow in the area we went, that they have an 18 hole golf course next to it and it did not have one snowflake on it. I could have played golf on Saturday – it was definitely warm enough.
- The Rose and I agreed on the way home, with some help from MS, that we are not dating anyone else and we don't want to date anyone else...We are almost boyfriend and girlfriend...man that is commitment huh? Things between us are good.
All in all I had a good trip. I hadn’t skied in many years and I accomplished my goal…I didn’t break anything.

Heading Home
I am finally heading home from Vegas. I know some people think this city is great, but I find it grating after a day or two. Four days is definitely too much. I will be home by dinner time tonight.
I am excited as tomorrow we are driving to PA to go skiing. This is my first time skiing in quite a few years. It is also the first overnight trip with her.
Speaking of her, it is nice to go away for a few days and actually miss someone. I have not had that feeling in a while.
Have a great weekend. I know I will.

Personality Puzzle
I think it is difficult to find someone whose personality compliments yours. We all have little idiosyncrasies within our personalities and although it is hard to find that one person that compliments your personality, I believe it is more difficult to have someone change their personality to fit you.
We won’t see each other again until next weekend as I am traveling all week. I am in Vegas meeting with customers. Who am I kidding, I am going to eat good food, drink expensive martinis and play some craps. If I have time, I will meet with customers and check out the CES show.
Next weekend is my first East Coast ski trip. This is my first ski trip in about 6 years. I have heard that skiing in the east is very different than in the west. More ice, less powder. I am sure the trip will be fun, but right now I would settle for a trip with no pulled muscles, torn ligaments or broken bones.

A December Miracle
Anyway, back to my budding relationship. It started out like most Internet relationships, an email or five, some instant messages, a planned date and finally a phone call. It wasn’t you usual first phone call in that it lasted over an hour and I think afterwards we were both excited to be meeting in person later that week.
With most of the people I have met online, I knew in the first 10 minutes that we didn’t have that elusive chemistry. That definitely was not the case with her. Despite the fact that I was late to meet her (never happens), after the first ten minutes, all I wanted was another ten minutes. We met for drinks and decided to extend that to dinner. We have been out about 8 times now and even as I write this post, I am still looking forward to seeing her later today.
So you might ask what is so special about her. I don’t think it is easy to explain the chemistry between people, but I can tell you that I like her sassiness. She is also smart and very sexy. She is chatty, but also quiet at all the right times. She has energy to spare and is very passionate. It also helps that she is beautiful.
So your next question is what she sees in me. I REALLY DON”T KNOW. However she does seem to also enjoy my company as well. It is still early, but I can tell you that I am enjoying the feelings involved with being at the start of a possible relationship.
