Fly The Friendly - Confined Skies

First off, I am writing this post at about 30,000 feet. I am on my way to Kansas City for a few days. I really need to speak with my travel agent though. Lately I have had to sit in the back of the plane on every trip. I am in row 17 today and, yes, that is the back of the plane. I mean that I am in the last row. So, how small is this plane? My seat doesn’t even recline because I am up against the bathroom. Yeah, I am uncomfortable.

I have decided that there is one really good reason to go on a diet and lose the 25 pounds I am now overweight…air travel. A few people got on this plane and if I was their size, I would drive to Kansas City. I am uncomfortable, but this has to be murder for someone who weighs 300 pounds. Not to mention that my traveling companion this week is about 6 foot 5 inches tall. My legs barely fit in these little ass seats, how the hell does he fit. I guess you can stand just about anything for two hours.

Ok, as promised, I have a few comments concerning the apartment hunting in Virginia. I have pretty much come to the conclusion that I am going to get about half of the apartment I used to have for the same money. Now I could find a cheap place to live, but I need some resemblance of a life and I can’t do that living in podunk. I like two areas so far, both seem to be lively. One is definitely more urban than the other, and more expensive. It is closer to DC and that makes all the difference. My commute will be longer, but the lifestyle is closer to what I had in mind. The other is an attempt at an urban neighborhood in a suburban world. It would significantly reduce my commute, but I feel like I might tire of it quickly. It is also not within walking distance of the Metro.

Choices, choices…OK not many really. Why do all apartments look exactly alike? I found two all weekend that stuck out at all. The rest were just a blur. I actually found one place with hardwood floors instead of beige carpeting. I like hardwood floors. I have a couple more to look at, two with lofts actually. I have also asked my real estate agent to look for some two bedroom places in the neighborhood I like, even if I have to pay more. I don’t have a lot of time to make up my mind. I am supposed to be out of my temporary housing in two weeks. Not much time, especially since I am going to NYC next weekend and I am out of town until Thursday this week.

Enough about that. I have decided recently that I need to find a new hobby to occupy my evenings and weekends.

OK, a new hobby or a girlfriend. A girlfriend may be the wrong term. I could use someone to hang out with on the weekends and in the evenings, sometimes. Maybe that is just a friend. Sure one day I would like to actually have a girlfriend and even fall in love again. Since that is a lot to ask for and very unlikely right now, I would settle for someone to hang out and do stuff with. I guess I could activate my match.com account and see if dating is any fun. It might be time to try again. But since even with match.com it is unlikely that I am suddenly going to find a group of friends to hand out with, I decided I needed a new hobby instead.

Well now, I know the obvious hobby is getting back into fitness. I mean I have to fly with this job and these damn seats are getting smaller and smaller, or am I getting bigger? That can’t be it. I do believe I am going to start working out again. It’s been almost ten years since I spent any significant time in the gym, but they tell me it is good for you and can sometimes be fun.

However, I don’t think the gym will take up enough of my time to keep me out of trouble, so I am open to suggestions. I am not really the outdoorsy type so like, hiking and camping are out of the questions, besides I need more of a night time hobby. Astronomy I guess would be a good one as you can only look at the starts at night, but I don’t think that really interests me to much.

I am still writing a little so I can continue with that. I have always wanted to learn to play the sax so there is that, but someone please tell me there is more to life than eating, drinking and watching TV. OK, shopping, but is that really a hobby or more of a calling? What do you all do to occupy your evening that doesn’t require a date?

I get off of work at 5, go to the gym from 6-7, dinner, then bed so a hobby is out of the question for me. Sorry I can't be of more help but I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the east coast! it's a great place to be but an expensive living place!
