Much Ado About Nothing

When I left my last company, I kept my same cell number. At the time this sounded like a really good idea. It has been almost a year since I left that company and I am still getting calls from my customers. Now this isn’t a huge inconvenience as I just let them know I don’t work there and give them my old boss’ number. I guess it is sort of flattering as I must have been pretty good at customer support. My customers still feel like they can call me for all their issues.

I also get some weird looks at times when I tell people my phone number. It is a CA number and I live in VA, and for some people I guess that is strange. In this era of cellular and VoIP technology, it is not like numbers matter. I know that because I work in the industry, but I can understand why some people would not understand it.

It has been nice, because all my friends know how to get in touch with me. Also, my old sales reps call me and that probably wouldn’t have happened except for me keeping my number. I use Plaxo anyway, so if any of my contacts do, our address books are kept up to date automatically. But it would still require all my friends to change my number in their cell phones.

I guess if I move overseas, I will have no choice but to change numbers. But for now, I will live with the weekly old customer calls.

I apologize if you read this whole post as it really was just a waste of your time. Maybe my next post will be read worthy, but don't count on it.

wasn't such a waste...I'll be back.

Sometimes having a number reminds you of better times, happier experiences, and friends you left behind. Nothing is wrong with that...and I didn't think it was a waste of time.

I'm laughing at your last paragraph. It's better than reading about someone changing diapers. Actually, I know many people that just keep the same cell phone # when they move, esp. since most of us have free long distance on our cells.
