One Week To Go...

I am down to one week until the Spain/Portugal trip. Good thing I called the airline yesterday to see if I could get an upgrade. You know why it was good? Because they had cancelled my flight to Brussels and the return flight home from Amsterdam. Yep, I would have gotten to the airport next week and would have been basically screwed. No flights, no vacation. They straightened it out for me, but again, I am glad I called. I couldn’t get an upgrade though. Apparently the cheap as fare I got through Travelocity is not eligible for an upgrade. So I will have to sit in the coach cabin for the flight…at least I am in the “we give you more room in this seat at the expense of those people sitting behind you” section.

I also picked up some euros this week. Not a lot as you can pretty much use your ATM card anywhere in Europe these days. My bank is pretty nice in that I won’t even be charged a fee for using a foreign bank. My bank refunds all ATM fees, theirs and the originating banks. Since money will just be an ATM away, I just picked up some traveling cash. Most travel books don’t even recommend taking traveler’s checks…man AMEX must hate that.

I also used some points on my Marriott account and booked my final few days at a Marriott Resort in Lisbon. It’s free so why not? No other hotels planned yet. Going to play it by ear, besides with so much sangria flowing, who knows we might end up sleeping in the park or at a bus stop.

Not much left to do but pack, buy a good pair of comfortable shoes. Still working on about 12 hours of Learning Spanish tapes. Weather forecast…sunny and 70-80 degree temperatures. Adeus meus amigos (Portuguese). Yeah, I'm versatile.

Make sure you go see some live Fado music while you're in Lisbon.

Did they not even tell you about the cancellation at all? I've always been hesitant not to book directly with the airlines b/c they seem more helpful than if you go through the third-party vendor (based on stories from friends).
