I had a beer tonight. Not that this is exactly post worthy. I only mention this because I can’t remember the last time I drank a beer. Not that I’m on the wagon or anything, but I generally do not drink beer. However, I was in the Haight tonight and decided to grab a bite to eat and a beer sounded good. A Pyramid Hefeweizen to be exact. If any of you aren’t familiar with the Haight, it was the center of the love and peace revolution. It was hippy central. The beginning of flower power. They like to think it still is. Believe me, if they ever legalize ganja, that part of the city will be in an eternal fog.
As I walked around the Haight tonight, I wondered one thing…how hippy can it still be when there is a Gap on the corner. The Gap…I mean that is about as anti, anti-establishment as you get. There is a Gap right on Haight Street, about a block down from Ashbury Street. Now it’s not all corporate America shopping stores. There are still a lot of used clothing stores and places to buy tie dye shirts, not to mention a few head shops. I know, those of you that know me are wondering what the hell I was doing down there. Well, I was trying to find some shirts from one of my favorite manufacturers in Hawaii, DaHui. There are two stores located in San Francisco according to their web sites, one in the Haight. Of course they did not have any DaHui in the store. So much for shopping in the Haight.
Walking around the area is still a lot of fun. A weird mix of tourists, couples, teenagers, people who have made seriously poor clothing choices and people who either think they are still in the 60’s or wish they were. There is also the fair share of homeless people. I saw one guy sitting on the sidewalk with a sign that said, “Need a Van…Anything will help.” Need a van? Is he really expecting to get enough change to buy his dream 1968 VW bus? It was one of the many recent times, I wish I had a camera phone with me. Way to funny.
