I read on the web this morning that the Vermont Teddy Bear company decided to stop producing and marketing their Valentine Day "Crazy For You" bear. Apparently the pressure from the advocates for people with mental illness caused the Teddy Bear company to pull this product. For those of you that do not know, the bear was in a straight jacket and came with commitment papers. This is upsetting on many levels.
First that the advocates for people with mental illness felt the need to focus their energy on getting this bear removed from the marketplace. You know they had to work hard to get this company to pull the bear from the market. It is not like they just sent a letter to the company. Aren't there enough REAL issues to worry about concerning the mentally ill people in this country and maybe worldwide. Maybe we should focus on their quality of life in the asylum and not whether they might get their feeling hurt by a teddy bear. Hell, if they are mentally ill, they probably don't get the idea behind the bear anyway. If this bear was so big on the advocates issues list, maybe we don't need advocates for the mentally ill. Maybe they should become the society to prevent the cruelty of stuffed animals...that poor bear in a straight jacket.
Secondly, that a company could buckle under such pressure is depressing. Don't pull the bear of the shelves just because some off the lunatic fringe decides you are being insensitive. Pull the bear off the shelves because it is a stupid gift. I am not sure which creative mind decided that this "crazy bear" was going to be a big seller, but I am sure they have probably spent time in a straight jacket. Although I have to admit, that all of those women who told me I was afraid to commit, would probably like the commitment papers.
I am just so tired of the political correctness police in this country. What's next? Are we going to stop selling condoms because it is insensitive to those geeks that can't get laid. Why don't you people lighten up, get a sense of humor and mind your own dam business.
